As new parents, there are countless decisions to make and we all want to get it right. They want nothing more than a healthy baby, growing and thriving and surrounded by love. And with a newborn, you need to make sure your little one is well fed right from the start. For many families, this means breastfeeding. But others turn to infant formula for a variety of reasons, whether it's from the first feeding or several months into the baby's first year. That's why we've compiled a list of the best baby foods of 2022.
We know that bottle-feeding parents, as well as breastfeeding parents, want the best for their baby, and there is sure to be the perfect option to meet your baby's needs.
Fed is the best (and that also means formula)
First, we would like to congratulate you on your new bundle of joy! There is no other happiness like what a new family member can bring. Second, we want to say that we support you in your decision to use formula for any reason.
Although the AAP recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of a baby's life, this is simply not feasible for many families. The struggles and anxieties that some mothers experience while breastfeeding are not always worth it, and we know the importance of a happy mother in raising children. Trust me, I've been there! There is absolutely nothing wrong with bottle feeding. Be confident in your decision and know that you are doing what is best for you and your baby.
And check out some of these formulas! Like the best of 2022, they're packed with optimal nutrition to ensure your baby grows bigger, stronger, and smarter every day!
Choosing a baby food
The most important thing to keep in mind is that any infant formula manufactured and distributed in the United States must meetFDA requirements. This means that no matter which formula you choose, you know it's safe for your baby. And that's number one!
In addition, every baby's needs and parents' preferences are different. This means that there are many different options when it comes to choosing an infant formula.
Most infant formulas are based on cow's milk, and for the vast majority of babies, they work best and are recommended. (We'll discuss when soy foods might be a good choice later.) You should always choose an iron-fortified formula.
We're focusing on powder formulas here, as this is by far the most popular and affordable option, but many of these formulas are available in liquid concentrates or in ready-to-use forms if desired.
Some questions to consider when determining which formula is best for your baby are:
- Will I be supplementing breastfeeding and will I need a formula that mimics breast milk?
- Do I want an organic or non-organic formula?
- What is my budget?
- Is my baby fussy with a sensitive stomach?
Eventually, you will find that many formulas have "extra" ingredients that other formulas may not have. HeBaby food specialistit reviews these extras in detail to help you decide what each one is for. Here is a short list of what they do/mean:
- DHA/ARA- non-essential fatty acids found in breast milk. They are now included in most formulas.
- probiotics- Live, good bacteria that can help with digestion
- prebiotics- increase the growth of good bacteria and are food for probiotics
- nucleotide- These have been added to baby formula for years, but not all formulas contain them. These are found in large amounts in breast milk.
- Lactoferrin and milk fat globule membrane (MFGM)- Breast milk proteins that contribute to the benefits of lactation
In general, these additives are mostly a small boost but not a requirement in your baby's formula to keep your baby healthy. Most of these won't be decisive when deciding on a formula, but they can also be great additional nutrients.
After reviewing our list of the best baby foods for 2021, we encourage you to check out our two other helpful baby food articles:Steps to feeding your baby infant formulaYHow to prepare baby food safely.
The best baby food to imitate breast milk
Many mothers combine breastfeeding and infant formula. Infant formula supplementation is common, particularly among mothers who express milk at work and may not be expressing enough to meet their baby's caloric needs. Formulas that most closely resemble breast milk are an excellent choice for these babies.
Additionally, formulas similar to breast milk can be particularly beneficial for very young babies who are formula-fed from an early age.
Since lactose is the main source of carbohydrates in breast milk, use caution when purchasing a breast milk-like formula (as opposed to sucrose or corn-based sugar).
Here are our top two formulas that mimic breast milk:
Enfamil Inspire Infant Formula
What to love:Enspire is an innovative non-GMO formula developed by Enfamil after collaborating on some of the most extensive human milk studies to date. After mapping and evaluating 1500 human milk proteins, the following additions were made to create Enspire:
- MFGM- MFGM supports cognitive development (intended to bridge the gap in this area between breastfed and formula fed babies)
- lactoferrina- supports your baby's immune system and intestinal development.
Parents also appreciate that the first ingredient does not contain corn syrup solids and is easily absorbed by their babies, even if it is not breast milk.
Similac Pro-Advance Non-GMO Infant Formula with Iron
What to love:This is the closest Similac formula to breast milk. 2'-FL HMO (Human Milk Oligosaccharides) is a prebiotic that is naturally abundant in most breast milk and has been added to Similac Pro-Advance. This is an additional layer of immune support already offered by Similac's proven product line. Plus, it contains a unique blend of DHA, Lutein, and Vitamin E for brain and eye development. Also to keep in mind:
- contains valuable nucleotides
- Palm olein-free fat blend allows for excellent calcium absorption
- GMO free
Some critics refer to it as a "miracle powder" that perfectly nourishes babies with less gas.
The best organic baby food
Many families have already switched to organic in their own diet, so it's natural for them to want to pass this type of diet on to their new addition. If you're concerned about possible chemicals or pesticides that may be present in your food sources, organic formula is also the way to go for your baby.
As with all organic products, the organic formula must be created with certified organic ingredients and processing aids. But it's important to remember that just because something says "organic" doesn't automatically mean it's optimal nutrition. Keep looking for lactose as your main carbohydrate source.
Here are our top two organic baby formulas:
Happy Baby Organics Level 1 Organic Milk Powder with Iron Infant Formula
What to love:The Happy Baby Organic formula offers your little one complete nutrition throughout their first year of life. They pride themselves on incorporating only carefully selected premium ingredients into a formula that is also modeled after breast milk. This includes lactose (which comes from cows raised on organic farms), which is also the main carbohydrate in breast milk. Other notable properties of this formula are:
- 4 times more prebiotics than most other organic formulas
- no corn syrup solids
- DHA/ARA
- easy to digest
Many parents of babies with sensitive stomachs have found this organic formula to be the perfect supplement and a great "plan B" when breastfeeding is no longer an option.
Earth's Best Organic Dairy Baby Powder Formula
What to love:Earth's Best's main goal with their formulas is to provide your baby with the perfect nutrition as they grow. This includes a base of milk sourced from cows fed only certified organic grains and hay, with no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. This special formula gets closer to breast milk with its prebiotic fiber for immunity and omega-3 DHA and omega-6 ARA to improve cognitive and ocular development. You will also love:
- no added corn syrup solids
- USDA certified organic and made with non-GMO ingredients.
Although many parents have said that they have used it for each of their children over the years and appreciate that lactose is the source of carbohydrates, some parents have expressed that it causes constipation in the baby. You must pay attention to this.
Better (cheaper) private label baby food
We just reviewed our best organic formulas, but organic often comes with extra dollar signs. While organic can have its advantages, it doesn't always mean it's better. If organic isn't in your budget, don't worry. You can give your baby a very healthy formula with the right mix of nutritional components for growth and still stick to a budget.
Formula in general can be expensive. After all, your baby eats a lot! Our top tips for saving on formula include free samples whenever you can (you can go to specific brand websites), clipping coupons, buying store-bought brands, or buying in bulk (like at Costco or Sam's Club).
You can often get a private label formula that contains the exact same ingredients as one of the other "trusted" brands. Check their labels and you'll see that you can save several dollars per container by choosing a private label.
Here are our top two private label formulas:
Kirkland Signature ProCare Non-GMO Infant Formula
What to love:It's no secret that Costco can save people a lot of money over time. Contain baby food. When you combine Kirkland's private label with buying in bulk, you can use the money saved on other baby needs. Plus, you get a formula that provides your baby with the nutrients he needs to grow healthy and strong. Ingredients you'll be proud to give your baby include:
- 2'-FL HMO to support the immune system
- DHA to support brain development
- Lutein to support eye development.
Customers agree that the nutritional value offered with this formula is unmatched. Some parents even went out of their way to get a Costco subscription just so they could get that baby formula deal.
Up and Up Gentle Non-GMO Infant Formula
What to love:While this milk-based formula is not organic, it is made with non-GMO ingredients (which prohibit the use of certain GMO-containing herbicides), which is nice to see in a private label formula. It's also a lightweight, easy-to-digest formula that bloated babies are likely to tolerate better than other standard milk-based formulas. Other featured ingredients are:
- Partially hydrolyzed whey protein, low-lactose formula
- contains DHA and choline, nutrients found naturally in breast milk
- supports brain development
Many parents have switched to this private label formula over other branded formulas and have commented that it is "just as good". But of course the big difference is the lower price. That's itone you might want to try on your next Target run!
Are you ready to warm up your baby's formula?baby beerIt's the best bottle warmer on the market (and it's completely portable), so you can give your baby the most comfortable feeding experience no matter what formula you choose. There are 4 temperature settings to choose from and it uses slow heating technology to heat your baby's bottle in 5-10 minutes with no hot spots! (We know you'll also love the detachable formula dispenser option for mess-free feeding.)
The best baby food for sensitive stomachs
As any new parent knows, crying and emotion are an integral part of having a newborn. Hunger, drowsiness, and overstimulation of an exciting new world all contribute to your baby's normal desire to cry for comfort and needs. But what if your baby cries uncontrollably for hours and nothing you do seems to be helping? It can be overwhelming and make you feel powerless as a parent.
If this is your experience, it's time to ask your pediatrician for help. They'll have the best advice, but they'll probably let you switch formulas around to see if that might help. Babies who experience colic or discomfort after feeding may need a milder formula designed for these special needs. For babies who need milk-free formula, check out this article!
Here are our top two formulas for babies with sensitive stomachs:
Gerber GoodStart SoothePro (HMO) Infant Formula
What to love:Gerber GoodStart SoothePro is formulated for babies suffering from colic, excessive crying, fussiness and bloating. They even recently added prebiotics and probiotics 2'-FL HMO (L.reuteri), making this the first formula of its kind. In fact, studies have shown that this combination reduces crying time by 50%. The gas-reducing benefits come from a special blend of ingredients, including:
- a carbohydrate blend with 30% lactose to relieve anxiety
- "Comfort proteins" are small proteins that are easier for your baby's tummy to digest
- DHA recommended by experts
Gerber also prides itself on sustainability. Parents concerned about the environment will appreciate the new recyclable packaging: the can is a material with an infinite lifecycle.
Similac Pro-Sensible Infant Formula
What to love:Similac Pro-Sensitive is a mild, low-lactose formula designed for babies who experience discomfort when eating. Babies with lactose sensitivity will likely do well on this formula and will hopefully see a marked improvement in fussiness and bloating. The good news is that nutrition doesn't have to be sacrificed just because your little one needs a milder formula. Beneficial ingredients found in other standard formulas are also included in this complete formula. As:
- 2'-FL HMO: an immune-boosting prebiotic (found naturally in breast milk)
- DHA, lutein and vitamin E for brain and eye development
- Lactose as main carbohydrate
Many parents swear by this formula for their gassy and sensitive babies. However, it is important to note that this formula is not intended for infants with galactosemia, who would need a completely lactose-free formula (see below).
The best soy baby food
All of the above formulas are milk-based formulas. Despitehealthy kids.orgstates that the AAP states that "there are few circumstances in which soy formula should be chosen over cow's milk formula for term infants", there are times when this may be necessary. luckily they havealso statedthat "soy protein-based formulas are a safe and nutritionally equivalent alternative to cow's milk-based formulas for full-term infants". Here are some cases where this might be necessary:
- Term neonates with galactosemia, hereditary lactase deficiency, or documented transient lactose deficiency.
- Infants with a known cow's milk allergy who are also not allergic to soy protein.
- Check out our list of the best non-dairy alternatives!
Parents who want a vegetarian diet for their child may also want to give their baby soy-based formula. In any of these cases, it's important to consult your child's pediatrician first.
Here's our top pick for soy-based formulas:
Enfamil ProSobee Formel auf Sojabasis
What to love:Fortunately, formula-sensitive babies have a great soy-based alternative in Enfamil's ProSobee. It's completely dairy-free and easy on baby's digestive system, while providing the full nutritional profile your baby needs to grow and develop. Notable properties of the formula are:
- DHA omega-3 has been shown to stimulate baby's cognitive development
- ideal for babies with lactose sensitivity or families following a vegetarian or kosher diet
- perfect blend of vitamins to support a healthy immune system
Switching to a soy-based formula is probably just what your baby needs to feel better. You should see less fussing and crying after feeding time. However, it is also recommended to feed your baby smaller amounts, hold him upright during feedings and burp every 2-3 ounces to reduce stomach discomfort.
The Final Word on the Best Baby Foods of 2022
There are a huge number of baby foods on the market. As with all decisions you make for your baby, it's important to consider your baby's unique needs when deciding which baby formula to use. The perfect formula for your niece or your best friend's baby doesn't mean it will work for your child. With a little research, patience, and experimentation, you'll have the perfect formula for your baby in no time.
