Definition
Mechanistic organizations are defined asorganization structurewhich is inherently bureaucratic and hierarchical. It is one of the most formal organizationsstructureswhich have a specific division of labor that leads to special job descriptions. The centralized system ensures a tight chain of command and higher authority with all its might.
The name comes from the resemblance of a machine where every part is synchronized for a predictable and standardized result.

What is a mechanistic organization?
For a mass production company, a mechanistic organizational structure is created because it can take advantage of economies of scale. It has a formal set of practices, procedures, rules and regulations without deviating from the path.
In mechanistic organizations, employees focus on their tasks. They set boundaries, stay within limits, and work separately at their workstations. Everything is passed down the chain of command until it arrives at the bottom.

The boss is responsible for creating standards, guidelines and instructions, which the other employees simply follow when carrying out certain activities
- Fast decision making –In mechanistic organizations, only the top level or manager of the organization has decision-making authority. This structure encourages rapid decision-making, as there is no need for consultation with lower-level management when making decisions. This also helps the company to implement its wishes more quickly
- Minimizes monitoring costs –In such an organizational structure, employees are appointed to specific positions depending on their specialty. The company strives to create the right match by putting the right person in the right job at the right time. Ultimately, this helps the organization minimize oversight costs as there is no need to micromanage employees who are doing their jobs well
- Effective People Management – Mechanistic organizations have established rules, systems of work, rules, regulations, and a systematic chain of command that runs from top to bottom. This is beneficial for the company as it contributes to effective people management
- Proper Discipline - In a mechanistic organizational structure, authority is centralized and each employee in the organization knows their duties and responsibilities. This ensures the right discipline
- Position in the network -In mechanistic organizations, top management directs middle managers to guide the lower levels, and this continues to the last level. The network helps to create an active communication network that ensures a timely flow of information
- Specific Responsibilities –In a mechanistic organizational structure, each person has a specific responsibility based on their skills, abilities and know-how. He cannot avoid his responsibilities or delegate his work to others, so he has to do it himself. Over time, this leads to a sense of responsibility for oneself, greater satisfaction and a high work ethic from employees

The disadvantages of mechanistic organizations are as follows:
- Static and rigid –Standardized activities in a controlled structure make mechanistic organizations static and inflexible. In this dynamic environment, there is no opportunity to make changes or suggestions
- Doesn't adapt to changeMechanized organizations find it difficult to effectively adapt to change due to their rigid organizational structure
- Workload – In mechanistic organizations, power and authority rests with top management, who themselves need to be involved in day-to-day activities. This significantly increases his workload.
- Autocratic Leadership –The bureaucratic structure encourages autocratic leadership in which lower and middle-level employees have no right to make suggestions or participate in the decision-making process in the organization. Even the flow of communication is one-way and smooth functioning is not guaranteed
- Formalized Structure – Another disadvantage of mechanistic organizations is their formalized structure, which prevents employees from being creative or using their skills to perform other tasks. Every employee has to work according to specific rules that do not allow any deviations
- Impractical decisions -Since only a limited number of people are involved in decision-making, the likelihood of impractical decisions increases
- coordination difficulties -A mechanistic organization finds it difficult to coordinate the different employees because everyone is only interested in themselves and their work
